Tam's Story

Where does one start? There are many different styles one can write in, and choosing the right style is a key to a good story. This one had so many alternatives; did I write it from the boy's point of view? Did I write it as a short story; or did I write it as a tiny documentary? I decided to write it as I heard it. To understand the story, is to understand a boy and understand a life that is alien to most people who will read it.
I have known Tam (and yes, I have changed his name to spare blushes) for a long time. Little did I know how long he had been around? He’s currently a door boy at a gogo bar and very friendly. He told me the other night he was going home to see his mother soon (nothing unusual there), but what he went on to tell me stunned me. However his story is not unique and he told me there are other boys around like him. He went on to tell me that he had not seen his mother for 7 years; had not been home to Ubon in the same period; and had not seen any of his many brothers and sisters in the same time. Just for the record he has no idea how many brothers or sisters he has. He’s now 20, this means he came to Pattaya when he was just 13.

At this point you need to disconnect all you think you know, from the reality that I learned that evening. We can all think about 13 year old boys being picked up by evil mama sans and brought to Pattaya. The stories talk about their being drugged and forced into the work. The boys can’t escape and they don’t get any money to run away with. In Tam’s case this was not true. He ran away from home because of trouble with the police and had a friend in Pattaya. He knew what he was getting into and didn’t mind it. The tales of Sunee Plaza from past eras are mostly true and very lurid. They relate to a time long gone and so there’s no point in going over old ground. Needless to say, there was a much more liberal attitude to what could happen in bars and what the boys could do in secluded corners.
Tam had done most of it, before he left his first gogo bar at the age of 14. He decided though that he was not gay, and so became a door man at 14 at his second bar. He still got many offs, and as long as the farang respected his limits, they would have a good time. Pay was pitiful in the early days. He might get 200 or 300 Baht for an off, and if he was very lucky, he could hide a little of it, so that it wasn’t stolen from him as soon as he got back. I did try to get from him what the most he had ever been paid. He thought about 12,000 Baht from one farang who took him for two weeks. He said he sent some of that home to mama. He had been offered 10,000 baht one time by a farang if he let him penetrate him. But, (and he was adamant about this) he says he has never done this with a man and never will.
He talks to his mother all the time (he says). He phones her once a month and sends her 1,000 baht each month to help the family out. He never has any contact with the rest of his family. He does proudly boast a girlfriend from Ubon. She came and stayed with him for a while. However she couldn’t find a job in Pattaya and went back. With some sadness he tells me he never had a baby. He knows all the characters in the area. From former bosses (and he has worked for most of them) to regular tourists. He’s never had a “boyfriend”. When I asked that he turned up his nose and repeated he was not gay. I told him many boys have “boyfriends” just to get money from them. He said he knew this and he was not like that.

And what of the future? Next year he will be 21 and go for the draw to get into the army. He hopes he gets selected and will be proud to be a soldier for Thailand. After that though, he wants to come back to the area and be a doorman again. And in ten years time? In his own mind he will still be a doorman.
Why have I written this small report? Because it is a story of a real person. Seldom if ever do we sit down and listen to a boy. Seldom do we give them the time to talk. I took pages of notes and had one of the most interesting hours I have had in a long time getting this together. To me it was more fascinating than weeks of superficial pleasantries. Here I’ve given you the smallest of flavours of what it was like, but through his words, I entered a world few farang think about – the world of the boy. In my head and through his words I lived his life, and more to the point the life of a 13 year old in a former era.
Next time you have a boy who can communicate with you and who is willing to talk, sit and listen. What you hear might change your preconceptions forever.

Michael's Birthday at Corner Bar

On November 30th, Michael celebrated his first birthday as owner of Corner Bar. There was a surprise party for him put on by his partner Thomas. 6 of the boys from the Alangkarn theatre came along and provided over 2 hours of wonderful cabaret style entertainment.
At the end there was a great cake, and everyone wished Michael a very Happy Birthday. It was a good evening and certainly was a surprise for the birthday boy!

Marina Inn Plaza Hotel

We welcome the Marina Inn Plaza as our latest member in SPI. The Hotel has changed hands and Joss, the new owner, has big plans for it. He intends to do it up, and increase the number of rooms for Western Tourists, from the current 45 to around 80. All rooms will be to a better standard. He will also be creating two new bars and most importantly be renovating the swimming pool. Work is expected to start soon and take to about March (ish). When complete, the pool will be free to residents and open to visitors for payment of a small fee. There will be security on the gate and in the pool area. A poolside bar will compliment the new area. I'll give you more details as they become available.

Party at Wunderbar

On the 9th December, a long term friend of mine called Ball celbrated his umptieth birthday at Wunderbar. He was given a right good time by his friends. The bar was decorated with balloons and a good buffet was prepared. Many of his friends, and friends of the bar gathered to wish him well and a good time was had by all.
The usual "donations/birthday presents" were stapled round his neck and much whiskey was drunk. All in all as good an evening, as Sunee can hold!

Corner Bar Starts Food!

The new lads, Michael and Thomas at the Corner Bar have started a limited food menu. They are currently doing a burger and chips in a basket (130B), Corn Dog and chips (100B) and Cajun chicken fingers (100B). I had the burger last night and have to report that it was a huge patty (200g) of prime Australian meat, and it really tasted great. The chips are home made from real potatoes and had a wonderful flavour. Such a change from frozen chips. At this quality and price it has to be a winner. There is only one downside I can see - it's going to be a disaster for my diet!
Oh, and if you don't know what a Corn Dog is, go along and try one. They have been described as a "heart attack on a stick"!

White Party - a review!

Where does one start, when describing a party such as this? I suppose from the point when I came into the soi and immediately was confronted by a 3m high white “sock” being blown upwards, welcoming me. The second thing I noticed was a huge quantity of white balloons.

I passed Crazy Pub and went into Krazy Dragon. I was not disappointed by what I saw. There was snow on the floor (well Styrofoam beads looking for all the world like snow), icicles hung from the mirrors and streamers from the fans. The boys were dressed in their normal white shorts, apart from some of the dancers who were dressed more imaginatively in white. I had fun there and then went deeper into the soi. Past Uniform Bar to Duc’s where there was a science show. I left school thinking chemistry was boring, but my 40 year old pre-conceptions were shattered by the experiments going on there. If only science had been this much fun! I blew a few HUGE smoke rings and watched a balloon explode, seemingly pumped up by nothing!

Past Come In, which was more like a huge wedding cake, and the boys bride grooms ready for me, past Corner Bar, where the boss had Angel Wings beneath his Stetson. I stopped at Corner Bar to play hoopla. Then past a small lazer display, to the center of the soi where the party really was hotting up. There was a “fire show” with blazing batons being whirled around.

I went up the soi towards the Marina Hotel, where I saw Place 2 B, Redgy’s and New Queens. At New Queens, I watched a coyote dance show. All the bars were buzzing and the entertainment in Place 2 B was amazing. At Eros, there was another lazer pointing at the pavement, and two tubby white “angels” to welcome me! As I turned around, I was confronted by a very loud and impressive fireworks display, which brought noise, confusion and joy to all who watched it.

Back again to Euroboys (I bought a souvenir calendar), Wan’s (for a display on angels dancing on stools, and not tubby ones either), a magician in the center of the soi, Balkan Express for another dancing display, Wunderbar with their lit up balloons, and Don Plaza Terrace, with the most beautiful katoy I had seen all night!

Then off back towards soi VC, past Memories, Up 2 U (where they offered to do my hair), Oud’s (for a piece of pie), Forest house with its loud karaoke, and out into soi VC. A quick detour left to Mic My, where Noi had a roast pig and was celebrating his own birthday, Mike’s Bar La Cage, with a seemingly impossible balloon and darts game, but where I won a bottle in the balloon popping competition, past the Little Mango (long closed, but still with balloons outside) and home to bed at a white decked Twoguys. I staggered up to bed and soon was asleep.

What memories will I take with me? Well, fun, laughter, friendship, smiles and a huge number of white-clad people having a great evening. I’ve been to Sunee many times before and this was the busiest I’d seen it. A GREAT evening, hugely enjoyed by me. It was close to the perfect party. PLEASE do it again, and change nothing. You can’t beat the best and this was exactly that - the best!

A Whiter Shade of Pale

On 27th May, 2009 a website was born. Two venues in Sunee Plaza had got together and the third said they'd stay in if the membership grew to 6. Well, it did get to 6, in fact today it stands at 30. And on 15th November, these 30 bars, guesthouses, restaurants and service places showed the world Sunee Plaza really can do it when it tries. As a P.R. exercise, it was just about perfect. They've just had a party to end all parties. Yes, some things didn't go quite to plan, and over the next few weeks no doubt they will be looking at those, BUT EVERYTHING THAT MATTERED DID GO TO PLAN. The 30 places and probably over 200 boys decked out in white balloons and white everything else. From snow on the floor, to streamers in the fans; from spray paint in the hair to white smoke rings, Sunee turned white for a night. It's hard to estimate the number in a crowd, but at a rough count well over 2,000 people had a great evening. I'm sorry if I run out of superlatives, but I've got such a good feeling from the event, I find it hard to put into mere words.
What were the highlights?

So many new faces visiting Sunee. Many I'd never seen before.

So many people together, wishing Sunee well and having a wonderful party.

WHITE, WHITE, WHITE EVERYWHERE. And a special mention to the bar which won the prize for best decorated - Krazy Dragon. I was told everyone else came second!

The surprise fireworks and the sound of the crowd watching them.

All the energy and enthusiasm from all the dancing boys.

The two baby angels from Eros.

Comments like "It's amazing how so many bars are working together at last, including those of so many different nations."

The parties that went on long into the night.

The comments from the bar owners, which included "This is the busiest I've seen Sunee in 7 years", and "I've had my best night EVER, by a long way, and I've been here 4 years" and finally "I've turned people away on 3 occasions - if I had 10 more seats I could have had 10 more customers".

Ad hoc comments and things, too many to mention individually; but like "It's Ken's round" being shouted through a megaphone.

Friends, old and new chatting, laughing and having a wonderful night.

But above all, to me, the smiles on everyone's faces, from the boys to every customer I saw.

I'd really like to thank the people who put this night together, from Guy who spearheaded the whole evening, the committee who met relentlessly and crafted the event, to the bars who grouped together and had faith in an area many had written off, to every boy who blew up a balloon, danced on a stool, or carried a drink to a customer with a smile. And in a lot of cases (probably too many) that customer was me.
Well done Sunee Plaza, you really have Come of Age. I can't wait for the next party!

Uniform Bar

ALL CHANGE ON THE PLANS! It is not now being converted into Sunee Plaza's newest Gogo bar and Beer bar. Instead they are moving the bar inside, installing a pool table and a darts board, putting in some extra comfy chairs and renewing the canopy outside. The boys will have a new uniform and a light snack menu will be started. Work starts Friday 6th November and will mostly be carried out at night. The bar will not close while this is going on!

SPI calendar

The brand new SPI 2010 calendar will be available from a stall at the street party. It will also be available after the party from some of the member bars. The cost will be 250B. It is size A4 and printed on nice quality thick paper. it is bound at the top with a hanger. The calendar features photos from the member bars. Look out for this unique souvenir.

Loi Krathong

It's nights like the 2nd November 2009, when you think that you're lucky to be in Pattaya. There was a little activity in the bars, and Sunee Plaza was quiet. The reason - everyone had gone to the beach at Jomtien. There were some lovely "Krathong" in some of the bars - the wonderful one pictured was in Come In Bar. There were also some well dressed boys in Up 2 U bar, but generally it was quiet. On the beach, however, it was a different story! The parties were in full swing and everyone was having fun. The krathong were launched into the sea, with wishes for the future, and just for a change, they weren't ravaged by small boys looking for coins. The korm fai were sent sailing airwards and made a wonderful picture for all to see. There were LOTS of fireworks, the boys drank a little whiskey and danced, and generally had a great evening. Sitting in a deckchair, at the start of November, in wonderfully pleasant weather, with a party that must have had 100,000 people at it, gives one a great feeling. Thanks Pattaya for a really good night.

Wan's Birthday Party

High season must be upon us as Wan celebrated his birthday marking the start on the 1st November. It was a party that stacked out the soi outside his bar and gave us all a very entertaining evening. A good buffet fed us all, and then the entertainment started. There were the very impressive fire-eaters and jugglers. After that was a ladyboy show which started with a "taste of Thailand" and went on from there. At 1.15, the birthday cake was brought out, and a rousing chorus, of Happy Birthday (which could be heard several miles away) bellowed out.

New Member in SPI

We all would like to welcome Enjoy Pub & Karaoke to the membership of SPI. They bring the total number of current members up to 30 and a grand bunch they are. We now have everything from host bars, gogo bars, restaurants, guesthouses, a travel agent, and Internet shop and now a karaoke among our members. Halloween in Sunee Plaza

All hallows evening can be a scary place in Sunee Plaza. The ghosts and ghouls come out in force and there's mayhem in the soi. There were dead things all over the place and there was a nasty crop of zombie boys and farangs walking around. The undead had a good evening, with several parties and some impromptu make up going on. Mike's Bar La Cage headed the party list, with a "trick or treat game" (do you really want to drink a glass of blood), a buffet, apple bobbing, and other silly stuff. Memories Music Bar had a party and decorated the boys and the bar. New Queens had possibly the most sumptuous buffet I've seen in Sunee with everything from dressed crab, shrimp and a whole table of yummy food (complimented by cobwebs and ghosts). Elsewhere, there were random dead, in many bars and places. Up 2 U and Don Plaza Terrace are just two I could mention, but quite a number were just shuffling around the place looking for their next victim. Their arrival was often heralded by fireworks.
A small group of judges walked around the soi and voted Mike's Bar La Cage as the best decorated, and a plague victim from Up 2 U (sorry we didn't get his name) as the best made up boy. I hope he survives long enough to collect his prize!
It was a great place to be, and shows Sunee can put on a party, even when not trying. Just wait until the 15th November when we DO try!

Opening of Enjoy Pub and Karaoke

With a bang and a flourish, Enjoy Karaoke opened in Sunee Plaza tonight. The place has been imaculately done out and looks really nice. The waiters are fresh and helpful, and although we didn't see them, there is the promise of Coyote dancers to come!
Tam and Rolph laid on a nice buffet and the locals had fun singing along to the music. The only downside was that the drinks were a little expensive - top gogo bar prices - and you didn't get a bin on your table until you were ready to go. That apart, the place looks new and sparkly. We all wish them well in this venture. It's another formerly dark corner of Sunee well lit up and now on the map!

Three parties on the 27th

I don't know what was special about the 27th October, just it appeared a day to have three parties in Sunee Plaza. First at Up 2 U they celebrated the birthday of Ton, one of the waiters. Some of his friends came in and they had a good time at the bar!

At Oud's bar, one of the oldest and most loyal customers, Jan, arrived from America. She had suffered a very extended journey and was very relieved to be "home". Known locally as "Oud's Mum", she is a much loved friend of the bar. The family treated her arrival with joy and celebration!

Last and not least at Krazy Dragon, it was the birthday of one of the customers - Candy. He lead a very vocal evening with much to drink and not a little karaoke! It was a noisy and fun time at the bar and all who took part enjoyed it (what they could remember of it anyway!)
